From April 25, advertisers using Microsoft’s social media management tool will no longer be able to access Twitter from their control panel. It is understood from Microsoft’s statement that the reason for removing Twitter from the advertising platform is to make changes to the social media API and fees.

Threat from Musk to Microsoft

Elon Musk seems to be uncomfortable with this situation. In a tweet he shared, Musk said, “They provided illegal training using Twitter data. It’s lawsuit time.” used the phrases. While Musk’s threat is unclear, it appears that OpenAI is using Twitter data to train the large language model behind products like ChatGPT. While on paper OpenAI is not Microsoft’s, the firm has been investing in the company since 2019, and a few months ago they significantly increased the investment. Adding OpenAI’s tools to its Bing, Edge, and Microsoft 365 services, Microsoft seems to be pulling the strings.

It’s unclear whether Musk will actually sue Microsoft at this point, as we’ve seen him in the past threaten others with legal action that never took place, including the creator of the @ElonJet Twitter account. In a message at the top of Microsoft’s ad platform’s support page, the company says it will “no longer support Twitter” starting April 25, 2023; which means companies can no longer use Microsoft’s platform to manage their tweets or interactions. According to Twitter’s new pricing regulation, large companies like Microsoft may have to pay up to $42,000 per month to access Twitter’s API. The new pricing system has also caused some smaller developers, such as Tweetbot maker Tapbots, to leave the platform.
