One of the biggest annoyances of a brand new Tesla is the lack of support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, although it can run both. According to CEO Elon Musk, there will be no updates to bring such software to old or new Teslas. The third-party developer community, on the other hand, decided to step in for this shortcoming.
Not so long ago, developer Emil Borconi, who started the AAWireless project (which makes wired Android Auto wireless), came up with a solution to get the Google app working on Tesla. It was possible to embed Android Auto in Tesla by establishing a connection between a special application installed on the mobile device and the active hotspot of the vehicle. The app has been impressively improved recently and Android Auto is now running smoothly.
How to install Apple CarPlay on Tesla?
Now another developer has created a very similar way to bring CarPlay to Tesla. In his statement shared on Twitter, Michal Gapinski explained that he managed to install CarPlay in the car’s browser, very similar to how the Android Auto application works.
According to a recent report, the whole concept is based on a Raspberry Pi and a custom Android build that allows the CarPlay UI to be loaded via the browser. While the experience so far is still a bit of a struggle, the video posted on Twitter shows that the app even supports steering wheel controls.
There is no word on when Tesla vehicle owners will be able to obtain this hack. But no doubt Tesla owners want to test it, as there is no indication that such functionality will be included in a future software update package.
