Elon Musk, one of the three founding partners of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI, which is on the agenda with ChatGPT today, had an interview with David Faber at Tesla’s Giga Texas factory. In this interview, Musk questioned the company’s changing business practices. Saying “I came up with the name” and “I am the reason OpenAI exists,” Musk claimed that the non-profit venture would not have been where it is today without his important role.

Initially committed to investing $1 billion in support, Musk had invested nearly $50 million in the venture. He resigned from OpenAI’s board of directors after a disagreement over a conflict of interest and effort to buy the venture. Later, the company ceased to be a nonprofit and accepted a $1 billion investment from Microsoft to accelerate the development of ChatGPT and image generator DALL-E. Musk says he’s questioning the transition from a nonprofit to a $30 billion limited-profit company.

Musk also says he has doubts about OpenAI’s governance structure, policies, and revenue plans after it became a closed-source entity. The switch contradicts its name, which suggests the company is open source.

Musk also thinks that after the release of ChatGPT, it is frighteningly good at its job and could quickly become dangerous. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Musk’s words, saying he agreed with the potential cybersecurity risk and was close to achieving real AGI in the next ten years.

This interview took place the day Sam Altman said AI needed regulation during a US Senate panel on the rise of productive AI and its potential impact on many different industries.
