Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which we know with its luxury cars, shared important details about its future plans in a statement made today. The company, which wants to focus on electric cars like other manufacturers, announced that it will invest $ 18.7 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles in the next five years.
Jaguar Land Rover also shared some details about the long-awaited all-electric Range Rover. The company also said that its factory in the city of Halewood in the United Kingdom will turn into a facility that produces fully electric vehicles, while also touching on issues such as when it will start to produce its new generation electric vehicles.
The first all-electric Range Rover will debut in 2025
According to Jaguar Land Rover’s statements, the first all-electric Range Rover SUV will debut in 2025. The company also stated that it will start taking orders for this vehicle towards the end of this year. The vehicle will be produced on the electric car platform called EMA, which we will see in other electric models of the manufacturer.
Electric models will start arriving from 2024
Operating under Tata Motors, JLR also announced that its new electric vehicles will start arriving from 2024. The first of these cars will be a Jaguar model in the four-door grand tourer class to be produced at the Solihull factory in the UK.
A range of 700 kilometers and a price of 100,000 pounds are targeted for the vehicle, which is not yet known. This car will be the first of three new electric models to debut in the coming years. The company had previously promised to make all Jaguar-branded models fully electric by 2025.
Although Jaguar Land Rover is ambitious in electrification, it lagged behind in this race. While Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and other rivals accelerated their transition to such vehicles, the British company only appeared with its electric SUV called Jaguar I-Pace. However, this vehicle, which was not even produced by JLR itself, did not hold up well. We will see in the coming years whether the company can increase its claim on electric cars with its new plans.
There are not many details about the autonomous driving investment.
Apart from these, no details were shared about JLR’s investment in autonomous vehicles. However, we do know that the company already has an agreement with Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet and operates autonomous vehicles in the US. Waymo provided autonomous driving services with a fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in the states of California and Arizona. JLR also previously made a deal to bring NVIDIA’s autonomous vehicle development platform, DRIVE Hyperion, to its vehicles.
