El Salvador, known as a quiet country in Central America, recently made a revolutionary decision. Deciding to recognize Bitcoin, which has become both the most profitable and the most losing investment tool in recent years, as the official currency, El Salvador thought that it would get rid of economic troubles in this way. However, the account at home did not fit the market, and the surge in Bitcoin caused El Salvadorans to be alarmed and protest the decision.
The name behind the decision taken in the country was the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele. Bukele, who made Bitcoin accepted as the official currency despite the opposition, became the most discussed name in this process. Bukele has now taken a step that will attract even more reactions. Nayib Bukele, who edited the biography section on his official Twitter account, wrote “The coolest dictator in the world” in this section.
Account thought to have been hacked
It was thought that the account of Bukele, who changed his biography on Twitter after the events, was stolen by hackers. However, the fact that Bukele continued to share as he always did led to the thought that this was not a hacking attack. While the Presidential Office did not make an official statement on the matter, Bukele’s move led to an increase in criticism.
El Salvador media described the incident as an underestimation of the protests. Johnny Wright Sol, one of the opposition party MPs, who made statements on the subject, said that what Bukele did was childish. Although it is not possible to know how El Salvador will return to normal, it seems that the fluctuations in Bitcoin will lead to a further exacerbation of protest events across the country.
