El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, announced that he will not be attending the 2022 Bitcoin conference.
Bukele had previously announced that he would make an important announcement at the conference to be held this year.
The president of El Salvador announced that he will not be able to attend the Bitcoin conference held in Miami due to the unpredictable conditions in El Salvador.
It is stated that the reason why Bukele could not attend the conference was the Maras gang operating in the country. El Salvador is currently conducting a major operation against the gang. On March 27, 62 people died in the murders attributed to the Maras gang, and the El Salvador Legislature suspended constitutional rights for 30 days. According to the El Salvador National Police, 6,894 gang members have been arrested in the past 11 days.
Bukele announced his plans to make Bitcoin legal money for the first time at the 2021 Bitcoin conference held last June.
Bukele was expected to make an announcement regarding his plans to sell $1 billion in Bitcoin bonds this year as well.
