The news that Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of the Yakuza series and rumored on many websites in August, will bid farewell to SEGA has become true.

Nagoshi said goodbye to SEGA and the players with his official statement. Nagoshi, who thanked the players and his old company for the 16-year Yakuza adventure, underlined that the Yakuza series can continue without him.

The Yakuza series first debuted on PS2

The series, in which we follow Kazuma Kiryu’s story of starting from scratch, in a place that can be called the red-light street of the Netherlands, was first offered exclusively to the Japanese market. Although the second and third games of the series were released to the European market after a break of about a year, they were met with great admiration.

After the game’s popularity in the European and world markets over the years, each new game in the series was released simultaneously with Japan. Especially with Yakuza 4’s worldwide success, the series came to the next generation consoles with remastered versions. Finally, Yakuza series, which even focuses on turn-based gameplay with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, is on the agenda with negative news these days.

Publishing a statement via Yakuza’s official website and his own blog, series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi stated that he will no longer be part of the production team of the game, along with Daisuke Sato, another key executive in Yakuza’s production team. Nagoshi admitted that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, of which he is the owner and CEO, will no longer be in any way involved in the development of Yakuza games.

Here are Nagoshi’s statements:

“As I’m leaving SEGA, I’m also leaving Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us and the Yakuza series over the years. Starting today, a new era begins for Ryu Ga Gotoko Studio and I believe the next generation will carry this legacy forward. I ask you to support the new games of the series. ”

– Toshihiro Nagoshi
