The 7.3-magnitude earthquake that took place in Japan in the past few days has adversely affected the chip manufacturers in the region. There are important chip companies producing in the region, especially Kioxia and Sony.
The chip industry was hit by an earthquake this time
It was reported that at least 4 people died and 100 people were injured in the earthquake that took place in an area close to the Fukushima disaster. The NAND facilities of Kioxia, which were most affected by the earthquake, were just starting to get into order.
New crisis in chip manufacturing
NAND production lines were shut down due to a leak in the past weeks and K1 facilities, which are expected to have a price increase of around 10 percent, are quite close to the earthquake zone. After the leak, production was slowly getting back to normal, but again, some wafers were damaged due to the earthquake. For this reason, it is stated that it will take a little longer for the plants to go into full production.
Sony also has 3 production facilities in the region. It is stated that the production of storage media and image sensor has completely stopped. Sumco and Shin-Etsu, which play an important role in particleboard production, were a little far from the region, but it is estimated that the lines were affected due to precision production. Renesas, which develops automotive sensors, also temporarily closed its facilities in the region. In the coming days, it will be reported how much damage the earthquake caused.
