Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3 as it was once known as the gaming industry’s largest convention and media platform, has officially ended. “After more than two decades of hosting an event that has served as the central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has decided to end E3,” Stanley Pierre-Louis, president and CEO of the E3 platform, said in a statement. he said.

E3 is officially dead

A mix of new competitors, partner withdrawals, changing viewer habits and pandemic-era disruptions led to E3’s demise, fending off years of attempts to revive the event that started in 1995. “We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners, it’s the right thing to do,” said Pierre-Louis. he said.

These opportunities mentioned include online video news conferences that convey information directly to audiences without the costs associated with attending a trade show, including booth fees, travel expenses, and strict deadlines for presentations. In fact, Nintendo initiated this rupture process by creating the “Direct” format in 2011. Sony PlayStation’s decision to leave the event in 2018 created a domino effect.

Subsequently, former E3 partner and journalist Geoff Keighley announced that he had stopped helping the ESA with the show and has since successfully designed its own separate events, such as Summer Game Fest. Keighley also developed the annual Game Awards format. The last E3 shows, including the last face-to-face event in 2019, were already quite dull. The pandemic further increased E3’s problems. On the other hand, efforts to replace E3 continue. The Game Awards ceremony seems to capture much of E3’s cultural power.
