Apple works with multiple suppliers to manufacture iPhones. However, the US trade sanctions against China limit technology giant Apple’s relationship with Chinese suppliers. In this context, according to a new report, it is stated that Apple will knock on Samsung’s door for memory chips of iPhones.

Sanctions leave Apple dependent on Samsung

Apple would procure 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory from Chinese supplier Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) and use these products in iPhones it will sell in China. However, US sanctions have upset Apple’s plans. It is said that Apple would procure about 40 percent of all iPhone memory chips from YMTC if there were no trade barriers.

According to DigiTimes, the California-based firm is expected to shift about 40 percent of iPhone chip orders to its main competitor, replacing YMTC. Because Apple already supplies most of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max screens from Samsung. Samsung is also one of the world’s largest memory manufacturers.

On the other hand, the Chinese YMTC is also in trouble with the USA. Because the company had violated the bans on Huawei, which was subject to the most rooted trade sanctions by the US, and supplied memory to the phone manufacturer. Currently, iPhone memory is covered by Western Digital, SK Hynix and Kioxia.
