During the heyday of the Cold War, both the United States and the Soviet Union prepared so-called “doomsday planes”, as it was thought that nuclear war might break out. These planes were designed to function as flying war rooms, where the leaders of the superpowers could issue commands in the event of a nuclear attack.
These aircraft are theoretically unaffected by a nuclear attack, as well as electromagnetic pulses, keeping their leaders in contact with other world leaders via satellite communication. They can refuel in the air, only land once a week, have their engines serviced, and then continue flying.
One of these aircraft remained in the air for 4.5 hours during the test flight. No official statement was made as to whether this test flight, seen in Nebraska airspace, was carried out in response to Russia’s nuclear war warning. It was also not disclosed whether the president was aboard the plane, as it is a sensitive issue.
