The Department of Justice (DOJ) has asked the Bahamas government about Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), former CEO of FTX.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) asked the Bahamas government if it had violated the extradition treaty after it offered new charges against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
New Charges from USA to SBF
The DOJ stated that the Bahamian government would not bring certain charges against Bankman-Fried, but said the charges would continue if the Bahamian government appealed. Discussions on the matter will be heard by a judge next month.
Sam Bankman-Fried has contested the charges against him after he was extradited from the Bahamas. The US Department of Justice then requested a special waiver from the Bahamas for the continuation of parts of the case. Prosecutors have filed several indictments with new charges against Bankman-Fried, but Bankman-Fried denies the charges. He expects a hearing in October.
The Department of Justice stated that the Bahamian government may refrain from advancing parts of the case, but said Bankman-Fried could not challenge the extradition-based charges. The ministry stated that if the Bahamian government’s response is positive, new accusations will continue, while if the Bahamian government denies the allegations, these accusations will not be pursued.
