Netflix is preparing to make the situation more difficult for users who share accounts. The company, which is preparing to switch to an ad-supported subscription system, also aims to remove password sharing worldwide.
Password sharing takes off in early 2023
Although Netflix has long been aware that its subscribers share passwords, it has not done anything about the issue so far. The pressure to share passwords increased after the number of subscribers lost earlier this year. The company lost more than 1 million subscribers worldwide in the last quarter.
Netflix is preparing to gradually remove subscribers from password sharing to remedy this situation. In the letter he sent to his shareholders, he made the following statements: “We have developed a feature to monetize account sharing. We will start to expand this feature to a wider area from the beginning of 2023,” he said.
Netflix tested the feature earlier this year in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, prompting users to pay extra for a sub-account. The company charged customers an extra $2.99 to allow someone outside the home to access the account.
Netflix has not made it clear how it will implement the password sharing restriction. However, during the tests, it was seen that IPs that did not match the IP address of the main account holder were disabled. However, there are concerns that Netflix may face backlash from consumers after years of allowing the password sharing app to grow.
Episodes of the series will be broadcast at once, not weekly.
Netflix continues to work on different methods to gain new subscribers. In his letter to shareholders, he also mentioned the company’s redeemable broadcast model, which involves airing all episodes of a TV series at once rather than weekly.
“We believe our members’ ability to immerse themselves in a story from start to finish increases the likelihood that they’ll have fun while telling their friends at the same time. That means more people are watching, joining and staying with us.” He thinks that with this situation, the number of new subscribers will increase.
