READING NOW Do not be fooled by 200 megapixel phone cameras: Here is the more important detail!

Megapixel detail is always highlighted about the camera of most of the phones released today. Once 64 megapixels were in vogue, now we see cameras up to 200 megapixels. So, is the megapixel item so important in smartphones? What does the quality of the photo you take with your smartphone depend on?

What does the quality of the photo taken with a smartphone depend on?

At the top of our list of the best camera phones you can buy is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with 4 cameras, including a 200MP sensor and 10X optical zoom. So does this 200-megapixel stuff make the Galaxy the king of smartphone photography? Of course no. Megapixels don’t matter. There are more important things to know when choosing and using your next camera phone.

Megapixel is actually a measurement. That means one million pixels. We mean the pixels in the camera sensor that detect light and color. A phone sensor may have 200 megapixels, but that doesn’t mean the final image will be that size. Also, shooting with a 200-megapixel camera can do more harm than good.

The size of the photo you get as a result of such a shooting may be very large. A 200 MP photo from the Galaxy S23 Ultra can be between 15 – 25 MB depending on color and detail. A full resolution 48MP photo taken from an iPhone 14 Pro is around 5MB. Already, the photo taken on the Galaxy S23 Ultra is reduced to 12 MP (3 MB) due to a process called pixel grouping.

If megapixels don’t matter then what does? Of course, the size of the sensor is of great importance. Camera sensor measurements are usually given in fractions of an inch and you have to do the math to figure out what you’re getting. The OnePlus Nord N30 has a 1/1.67-inch 108 MP sensor, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 1/1.33-inch sensor.

Here you can understand with simple math that the sensor of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is larger. The 1/1.67-inch sensor on the OnePlus phone is 0.59 inches smaller than Samsung’s 1/1.33-inch sensor, which is actually 0.75 inches. For this reason, you should be careful when buying a phone, and you should definitely look at the sensor size rather than the megapixels. Bigger sensors will give better results.
