Hyundai Motor has found a different way to deal with the global chip shortage that has hit the automotive industry deeply. The South Korean company will use home appliance chips in its cars. We are talking about the IC control unit, which is planned to be included in the headlights and taillights.
Tests determined that these components can replace similar parts in automobiles. Additionally, the demand for these chips is not as high as for automotive industry chips. Therefore, Hyundai will be able to provide the necessary chip supply to continue production.
The chips used in automobiles are of course specially produced according to the needs of the industry. Therefore, they are subject to time-consuming certification processes to determine whether they are resistant to harsh conditions. Such high standards are not sought in electronic device chips.
Tesla also removed parts
Since the chip that Hyundai wants to use will serve in the lighting part rather than the main system, there are no obstacles to its use. it doesn’t appear. All automakers are looking to find different ways to mitigate the effects of the chip crisis.
One of them, Tesla, decided to remove one of the two electronic control units in the steering systems of some Model 3 and Model Y cars produced in China in order to meet its sales targets and to reduce the negative effects of the semiconductor supply shortage.
