God of War Ragnarok continues to impress players. From its gripping story to its impressive graphics, it would not be wrong to say that Kratos once again made his place in the hearts of players by swinging his ax and smashing the Hel-walkers.

The explosion of crumbling flesh and knuckles echoes through your PS5’s headset as you and your ax rip Odin’s allies from their limbs. But since Scandinavian creatures are impossible to find in the real world, there is an intriguing secret behind the deadly sounds of the countless enemies you have destroyed. Fortunately, we don’t need to report anyone for now, as the God of War Ragnarok sound designers created the sounds with a vegan preference.

Sound designers and sound effects artists used bell green peppers to add the sound of Kratos smashing his enemies into the game.

You might think this is an odd choice for sound recordings, but it’s worth remembering that 343 Industries used something much weirder and softer than bell pepper when recording alien sounds for Halo Infinite. This strange thing was the technical art director’s “pug” type dog, and its growls and grunts are thought to have formed the basis of Covenant grunts and coyotes or Promethean warriors.

Of course, green bell peppers aren’t the only ones behind God of War Ragnarok’s sound design excellence. It takes a big team to edit and synchronize all these weird and wonderful sounds, and we can safely say that they did a masterful job. One of the most impressive aspects of God of War is the immersive sound design that brings the world to life. Not only can you hear the satisfying sound of piercing through enemies, but you can also hear the whistling of the wind and the crackling of leaves under your feet with tremendous realism.

Despite technological advances, the fact that AAA game studios still have to rely on the abilities of peppers and pugs is certain to have a special fascination.
