You know the wind turbines, which are becoming more and more common in our country every year. The fields created with these giant structures can be used to power a village, town and city. However, even if their number increases, we are still dependent on energy sources such as thermal power plants, which have serious damage to the environment.

On the other hand, the three-bladed designs of the wind turbines that we commonly see are not perfect either. Although the logic of converting the movement that occurs as a result of the wind coming at right angles to the blades into electrical energy works, the engineers focus on the efficiency obtained from the independent variable “movement” in this problem.

Look carefully at the wind turbines named WAVT below. Although they look strange, they produce 2 times more energy than what we are used to, because they have 2 wing sets.

There are a total of 5 blades, 3 on the lower side and 2 on the upper side of the 2 turbines, which rotate in opposite directions to each other:

Thanks to this design, wind turbines can stand closer to each other. Thus, 4 times more wind turbines are placed on an area of the same size:

This is how the conventional wind turbines we are used to seeing are placed:

In order for them to receive the wind at a right angle, they need to be fixed at a right angle to the ground as much as possible. To achieve this on the sea, they must be balanced with weights. They also need to turn to the wind in order to generate energy. As a matter of fact, WAVTs can gain positions according to the wind from any angle.

WAVTs, on the other hand, move on the sea surface according to the wind direction, thus increasing the friction area of the wind:

…and finally, the WAVT turbines are also not an obstacle to the flight paths of the birds:

In this way, the authorities say that bird deaths will also decrease. So what do you think about this design?
