PlayStation 5, which has been struggling with stock problems since it was announced in 2020, has achieved a first in sales. According to the latest reports confirmed by Sony, a total of 20 million PS5s have been sold to date. The next-gen console is still behind the PS4, but Sony has pretty big goals.
PS5 sales reached 20 million in 18 months
A new report by GamesIndustry.biz has revealed the latest data on PlayStation 5. According to the report, Sony has sold 20 million PS5 units worldwide. This marks the next-gen console reaching a milestone amid the pandemic and global supply chain issues.
PlayStation 5 has completed its second 10 million target in less than a year, even though it has stock problems all over the world. However, let’s not ignore that while the PS4 reached the sales figure of 20 million in 15 months, it took 18 months for the PS5.
Japan-based company, in its report for the fiscal year ending March 2022, announced that it sold 11.5 million PS5 consoles. This figure shows that the company missed its first target of 14.8 million. However, Sony has announced that it wants to sell 56 percent more PS5 compared to the previous period.
In fact, the 56 percent increase in PS5 sales won’t be enough to meet customer demand, according to the company. Speaking on the subject, Veronica Rogers, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony, said:
“Fans who have not yet owned a console, we are planning a significant increase in PS5 production this year and to make sure the PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants it. He should know that we are working non-stop.”
Sony also showcased new PS5 and PS VR2 games at the State of Play event the other day. The event featured prominent games such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, Residen Evil Village VR, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered for PC, and Street Fighter 6.
