As reported by Deadline, new research led by UK data firm Omdia suggests that Netflix will remain the world’s most popular streaming service until at least 2026. The company predicts that Disney Plus will continue to grow at a faster rate, but may not outshine its biggest competitor as quickly as previously thought.

Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers between January and March of this year, and that number is expected to exceed two million by the end of June. However, according to Omdia, in 2026 Disney Plus will have around 240 million subscribers, while Netflix will remain a little ahead with 260 million subscribers.

Omdia’s findings, which suggest that the Netflix subscriber base will only increase by around 40 million over the next four years, do not foresee a dramatic change in the company’s trajectory, but the data still show that the expected decline is delayed.

Netflix and Disney Plus reported 221.6 million and 137.7 million total subscribers, respectively, in March 2022.

Omdia also said that by 2026, HBO Max and Prime Video will both serve approximately 150 million subscribers, and Peacock and Paramount Plus will predicts it will be the next two most popular streaming services on the block.

Omdia Senior Director Maria Rua Aguete said in a statement about the findings: “In terms of coping with rising costs, consumers are choosing to cut back on spending other than their own entertainment at home. In fact, cuts in other spending allowed them to subscribe to extra services, as [our] survey showed.”
