A new effect of deepfake technology, which has been in our lives for years and can be used for all kinds of evil, has emerged. A study led by scientist Gillian Murphy, who continues her studies at University College Cork serving in Ireland, revealed that the human brain can be deceived with deepfake technology, causing things that have not happened to be remembered as if they had happened.

Within the scope of the research, which was carried out with the participation of 436 people, all kinds of deepfake videos were watched by the participants. Let’s give a few examples of these videos: Brad Pitt was featured in the movie Shining, released in 1980, and Charlize Theron was featured in Marvel’s Captain Marvel series. In addition, Chris Pratt was cast instead of Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

49 percent of respondents believed the deepfake was real!

As a result of the investigations, it was understood that 49 percent of the participants believed that deepfake content was real. Moreover, although the productions were old, it was as if they thought they had watched the same movie in the same way in the past. People also believed that Brad Pitt, who has been active on screen since 1987, played in a movie released in 1980. On the other hand; According to the same research, 41 percent of the participants said that the Captain Marvel series with Charlize Theron was better…

Chris Pratt, who starred in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first movie in the Indiana Jones franchise:

Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself from deepfake – technically!

Gillian Murphy, who gave an interview to The Daily Beast about her research, said that her work reveals how easy it is to influence people. However, according to Murphy, giving people tech literacy training can help them understand whether the videos they see are deepfakes or real. Of course, it should not be forgotten that for such a thing to be possible, extensive training should be given.
