Meta is ending its Messenger Lite application for low-end Android devices. The company has started notifying Messenger Lite users that the app is no longer available, and is recommending everyone to upgrade to the full version of the Facebook Messenger app.
Messenger Lite will expire after September 18. Currently, new users can no longer download the Lite app, but existing users can continue to install the app on their phones, at least for a while.
Also, as reported by 9to5Google, some Messenger Lite users are said to have received notifications asking them to “use Messenger to continue chatting” in full screen.
Meta, which still bears the name Facebook in 2016, had a clear goal when creating the Messenger Lite application. This app was designed for low-end Android phones of that time and users in regions with unstable internet connections. Facebook released this app as a fast, efficient version with a file size of less than 10MB and using less mobile data than the full version.
All this was in 2016, when low-end phones were much less powerful than today, and mobile networks were not as reliable. By now Meta may have decided that the app’s usefulness has come to an end.
