The Dark Souls series, which was developed by FromSoftware and became a phenomenon in a short time with its first game released in 2011, came up with very interesting news these days.
A very serious vulnerability was discovered in the series published by Namco Bandai, which in itself caused a game genre called souls-like to emerge. According to the latest reports, players should not play any Souls game in online mode on the PC platform until the patch arrives.
Hackers can take over computers playing Dark Souls
A serious vulnerability was discovered in Dark Souls 3, the game of the Souls series released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows platforms in 2016.
It all started with a recent broadcast by The Grim Sleeper, who broadcast while playing the Souls series. Towards the end of the broadcast, the game suddenly crashed and a robotic voice began to speak through Microsoft’s Text-To-Speech (Text-to-Speech Service). This application, which said and criticized how badly the publisher played the game, emerged when Microsoft PowerShell suddenly opened and ran various codes.
The background of this situation is quite interesting: According to a screenshot sent in SpeedSouls, the Discord group of players trying to finish the Souls game fast, the hacker who discovered this vulnerability previously reached FromSoftware, the producer of the game. When the messages he sent about this vulnerability were ignored, he aimed to attract the attention of the producer by using this vulnerability to sabotage the broadcasts of Twitch publishers.
RCE vulnerabilities that allow any computer to be hacked remotely are named by Kaspersky as one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities. In this sense, it is recommended not to play any Souls game on the computer – at least in online mode – until an explanation or a comprehensive patch comes from the producer. It is highly likely that this vulnerability will also exist in Elden Ring, which will be released in the near future.
