A partnership between the two companies began three years ago when Samsung began working with AMD to bring RDNA2 graphics to Exynos chips. Introduced in early 2022, the Exynos 2200 in the Galaxy S22 series was Samsung’s first smartphone processor to feature the Samsung Xclipse GPU powered by AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture.

The two companies announced plans to continue their partnership to bring high-quality graphics to more smartphones in an announcement in April. However, a new rumor claims that Samsung may be on the verge of ending its partnership with AMD.

Rumor has it that System LSI, the division of Samsung Electronics responsible for manufacturing Exynos chips, is considering developing its own mobile GPUs in-house rather than continuing to rely on AMD.

Samsung aims to strengthen its in-house development capabilities in artificial intelligence, automotive, ISOCELL camera sensors and graphics by 2025. This will allow the company to have full control over the design of critical graphics processor components.

If this leak is true, we may encounter Exynos processors with Samsung GPUs instead of AMD architecture in the future.

For now, rumors continue that the Exynos 2400, which is expected to be released next year, will use the improved AMD-based GPU that offers twice the graphics performance. However, it is currently unclear where the Samsung – AMD partnership will go in the long term.

According to other leaks, Samsung plans to use the Exynos 2400 processor in Asia, Africa and Europe, while the Canada, China and USA versions of the Galaxy S24 series will also be offered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
