The United States, South Korea and Japan have stated that North Korea uses cryptocurrencies to support banned weapons programs.

The United States, South Korea and Japan have expressed deep concern over North Korea’s work of “malicious cyber” activity in support of banned weapons programs. Cryptocurrency funds stolen by North Korean crypto thieves have been a major source of finance for the country’s weapons programs, according to the United Nations, noting that such crypto attacks are at their peak.

Statements Received from Three Countries on the Subject

“We note with concern that overseas DPRK IT workers continue to use false identities and nationalities to evade UN sanctions and raise funds for missile programs,” the three countries’ envoys said in a joint statement on Friday, using the acronym for People’s Democratic Republic. South Korea’s envoy, Kim Gunn, held talks with his US and Japanese counterparts this week and denounced North Korea’s ongoing weapons testing.

Japan’s foreign ministry said the Japanese envoy also “strongly condemned” the “unprecedented frequency and style” of North Korea’s missile launches as a serious and imminent threat to regional security. Japan announced on Friday that it is extending its trade ban with North Korea by two years, with exemptions for humanitarian reasons.
