In a news article we shared with you last week, we talked about an important decision of the European Union regarding technology companies. In this context; Within the scope of the “Digital Markets Law”, it was shared with the public which “gatekeeper” technology companies were and what they should do. The latest news from the Meta front reveals how WhatsApp, one of the gatekeepers, will comply with the rules of the European Union.
WhatsApp’s Android beta version, code 2.23.19.8, revealed that Meta was working on a new feature to comply with the decision taken by the European Union. Accordingly, WhatsApp will offer cross-platform support in the future. A new section called “third party chats” will be added to the application, which will allow users to access messages from applications other than WhatsApp.
Unclear how the feature will work
WABetaInfo could not find any information about how the feature works, of which it could only take a simple screenshot for now. As such, we do not have the slightest information about how the feature will work. However, we think that thanks to this feature, SMS messages sent to your phone will be included in the third-party chats section. The user will be able to respond to the message that he can view via WhatsApp.
It is not clear when the new feature WhatsApp is working on will reach users. In fact, it is not clear whether this feature will be available globally. Meta may also make this new feature available only in European Union countries where the Digital Markets Act is applicable. The coming days seem to be a process in which we encounter similar steps from all technology companies declared as gatekeepers.
