Black Friday discounts, which are held every year and are known as Legendary Friday and Wonderful Friday in our country, came to the fore as we approach the end of another November. Regarding the discount day, which will be held on Friday, November 26 this year, various warnings were given from the Ministry of Commerce to consumers to be careful.

The Ministry of Commerce stated that in e-commerce shopping, there are also disadvantages such as disruption in logistics processes, sending defective goods or not sending goods by malicious sellers, not using the right of withdrawal, along with misleading discounts such as a hike and then a discount in e-commerce shopping. The topics of the Ministry, which shared the topics that should be considered for consumers, were as follows:

Warnings of the Ministry of Commerce:

  • Consumers can get the products or services they really need, ensuring that logistics is not disrupted and balancing their individual budgets.
  • Before shopping, with a short preliminary examination in search engines, examining whether the seller has detailed information, complaints about it and customer support plans for these complaints can prevent victimization.
  • Researching the approximate price of the product from similar channels can prevent cheating on price.
  • In order not to be caught in the trap of discounting after the hike, it is necessary to research the previous sales prices of the products and to approach the unrealistic and high-seeming discounts carefully.
  • If the name of the website does not appear as usual in the address bar, checking the website name in case the website is fake or counterfeit can prevent victimization.
  • Checking the product and price of the seller’s own site against the promotion and advertisements in the social media against the possibility of counterfeiting of the sites can prevent victimization.
  • Whether the site has details such as SSL certificate, 3D security or virtual card payment in online shopping, and if so, choosing these payment methods is important for security.
  • Before making a payment, reading the preliminary information (the seller’s title, full address, contact information, total amount to be paid, information on the right of withdrawal, etc.) to be given to the consumer and checking the accuracy of the information can prevent victimization.

The review by the Ministry has already started:

In its statement, the Ministry also announced that necessary administrative sanctions will be applied in case of detection of violations and that ex-officio investigations have been initiated by the Advertisement Board regarding the special discount days. It was reminded that consumers who lost their rights should apply to Consumer Arbitration Committees or Consumer Courts.
