Apple and Google hold the smartphone market with the operating systems they offer. These two companies, which dominate the smartphone market, require developers to use their own app stores. But Japan’s new decision on app stores could change that.
Critical decision for App Store and Play Store!
The Japanese government, at the panel held last day, decided that Apple and Google’s smartphone app stores negatively affected the competition. The two companies that dominate the smartphone operating system market will now have to allow their users to download apps using services other than their own app stores.
While stating that competition will be encouraged with this decision, Japan expects a decrease in application prices. This regulation, chaired by Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, is scheduled to go into effect next year.
As it is known, Apple prevents iPhone users from downloading applications without their own application store. 97% of Android users download apps from the Google Play Store. The two companies have also banned third-party app providers from accepting payments from app users through any payment platform other than Apple or Google.
In addition to all this, application providers also complain that Apple and Google charge them up to 30 percent high commissions for such payments. With the new regulation, if adequate security and privacy protection measures are taken, developers will be able to offer applications without the need for the App Store and Play Store. The two companies will also be obligated to allow users to make payments via third-party platforms.
The Japanese Government, which took precautions on the App Store and Play Store, also signed a new decision for the installed applications. From now on, both companies will be obligated to allow users to easily delete apps.
With this decision, Japan may put Apple and Google in a difficult situation. On the other hand, with the decrease in costs for developers, a significant decrease in application prices may occur.
