If we count the things that the covid-19 pandemic has disrupted in the world, we may not be able to finish it. However, the list continues to grow. The disruptions created by the pandemic have also started to hit domestic animals. Losses from animals whose vaccinations are delayed are increasing.

Istanbul Chamber of Veterinarians President Prof. Dr. Murat Arslan stated that due to the production of COVID-19 vaccine, mixed vaccines that protect animals from many diseases cannot be produced. Stating that there is a shortage of stock in our country as well as all over the world, Arslan explained that there are frequent losses in unvaccinated animals.

“We’re losing a lot”

Stating that the demand for animal vaccines has increased with the adoption of a large number of animals by every person left alone with the onset of the pandemic, the President of the Istanbul Chamber of Veterinarians, Prof. Dr. Murat Arslan said that vaccines produced for humans also cause problems in the supply of materials required for vaccine production. Arslan summarized the situation as follows: “Part of the vaccine production capacity in the world, especially with the coronavirus, has been reserved for coronavirus vaccines. There are some problems at this point as well. Vaccine production centers, which used to be stocked with great potential in the past, have now allocated some of their capacities to the production of coronavirus vaccines. This has also become a factor. As the vaccine production increased, the raw material, the bottle called flacon, and the ingredients of the vaccines began to suffer. Unfortunately, when we added them together, the problem got bigger and bigger. ”

Stating that manufacturers of mixed vaccines, which protect animals from 5 different diseases, are shopping more with the countries that provide the most profit, Prof. Dr. Murat Arslan stated that animals whose vaccination time has passed are vulnerable to more infections and diseases as their immune systems weaken; He stated that there were many more casualties as a result. Arslan gave the following advice to those who have pets:

“People who have contact with animals outside, who love and feed animals on the street, should pay attention to normal hygiene conditions, especially after contact with the patient’s faeces, urine, blood, saliva or snot, body, skin, clothes, and if possible after going home. It is useful to take precautions such as soaping hands, changing clothes, taking a shower. If we want to buy an extra animal in our house during this process, I would definitely recommend that they get an opinion from a veterinarian and have it checked whether it poses a risk to our pet. ”
