Researchers at the Yunnan Institute have discovered five ‘worrying’ viruses in bats that can infect humans. A preprint of the study has been published in the bioRxiv archive.

All viruses are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from one species to another. In general, such pathogens pose a risk to humans. Researchers say that one of the viruses, BtSY2, has similarities with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and therefore is more likely to be transmitted from animal to human.

“We identified five strains of viruses that may be pathogenic to humans or livestock, including a novel recombinant coronavirus similar to SARS-CoV-2. Our study highlights the prevalence of interspecies virus transmission.” statements are included.

More than one virus can be transmitted to the same person

Researchers took samples from the rectums of 149 bats from 15 species in Yunnan province in southern China. During their work, they succeeded in sequencing the DNA of five viruses. What is worrying is that a person can be infected with more than one virus at the same time.

Experts say that most virus outbreaks are caused by people or pets coming into contact with bats. Scientists agree that more studies should be done on viruses to prevent future epidemics.
