Research on cannabis, which harms social life and health with its excessive consumption, continues rapidly in the scientific world. While it has been demonstrated before that the consumption of hemp in certain amounts has various benefits, one more harm of cannabis has been revealed recently.

A joint study by Rutger University and Mount Holyoke College showed the negative impact of cannabis on couples. The results showed that couples who used cannabis actually didn’t quite resolve the issues in discussions about negative issues.

In confrontational conflicts, they avoid conflict, but are satisfied with the outcome:

In the study involving 145 couples, the participants were examined how often they consumed cannabis. In addition, 10-minute discussions about important disagreements between the couples were recorded. The psychological stress of couples’ responses to each other was examined by individuals’ heart rate and breathing.

After that, the couples discussed the issues they agreed with each other for 5 minutes. At the end of the discussions, the researchers measured the effectiveness of the discussions and how satisfied individuals were with the results. Discussions were evaluated from points such as avoidance and negative participation.

Studies revealed that participants who used marijuana more frequently showed less parasympathetic withdrawal during interactions with their partners. This meant that people’s capacity to respond flexibly in a situation of pressure is reduced. However, it was observed that couples avoided conflict during the discussion and were less able to direct themselves to a discussion about the positive aspects of their relationship.

Contrary to this, when asked how they thought their confrontational arguments with each other went, respondents reported more satisfied with how the conflict was resolved. This indicated that the couples could not see the problems between them clearly and therefore could not find a clear solution.
