Android Authority reports that Samsung is limiting the performance of many apps on some Galaxy smartphones. The reason for this is probably seen as saving battery life. Reportedly, Game Optimization Service (GOS) is used to limit the performance of up to 10,000 apps, including Netflix, TikTok, and many non-game-related apps like Microsoft Office.
To make matters worse, performance benchmarking applications such as 3DMark, GeekBench 5, and PCMark are not restricted, so running one of them does not show any performance degradation on the device. According to Android Authority, Samsung seems to be aware of this situation and says it is investigating it. However, it has not been officially confirmed yet.
This restriction was apparently noticed by Korean users who posted a list of 10,000 affected apps. Since the issue was revealed, Samsung’s Korean forums have been flooded with complaints from users regarding the GOS issue.
Recently, OnePlus also admitted to slowing down apps with its latest smartphones to save battery life, and asked Geekbench to remove OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro from the Android Benchmark table. After this situation was noticed, he changed the settings to match the performance requirements of each application with the appropriate power required.
