Ethereum Software Firm ConsenSys Announces Collecting User Data
ConsenSys, one of the firms behind the Ethereum merger, said in a statement that user data about the on-chain wallet service MetaMask is also being collected.
The announcement comes days after decentralized crypto exchange Uniswap made a similar update to its privacy policy. ConsenSys mentioned in its statement that it collects some data related to user identity such as contact information, profile information, along with some other user data.
The firm added that while it uses Infura, the default remote procedure call (RPC) provider in its digital wallet MetaMask, Infura will also collect the user’s IP address and Ethereum wallet address for transactions. Financial data will not be collected if a user switches to a different RPC in MetaMask.
Following the announcement, the crypto community expressed their dissatisfaction with the announcement as this latest update invades user privacy, one of crypto’s fundamental building blocks.
