Threads investigation into Meta
In the official announcement made by the Competition Authority, the following statements were made: “The preliminary investigation carried out into the allegation that Meta Platforms, Inc. violated Article 6 of the Law No. 4054 on the Protection of Competition by connecting its newly launched application called Threads with the Instagram application. It was decided by the board. The Competition Board, which discussed the information, documents and findings obtained in the preliminary investigation at its meeting dated 23.11.2023, found the findings serious and sufficient; Meta Platforms Inc. It decided to open an investigation against him, number 23-54/1031-M.”
Apparently, the Competition Authority thinks Meta is abusing its dominant position. In the relevant law numbered 4054, it is stated that activities such as “Actions aimed at disrupting competitive conditions in another goods or services market by taking advantage of the financial, technological and commercial advantages created by dominance in a particular market” are anti-competitive. Promoting and featuring Threads via Instagram appears to be against the law. Meanwhile, it has not been announced when the Competition Authority will complete the investigation.
