The internet, which was founded in the 1960s with the ARPANET project supported by the United States, entered our lives by transforming into today’s modern internet in the 1970s. This revolution, which connects the whole world at the same time in a virtual environment, has made a magnificent development especially in the last 25 years.

While it was very rare for children to use the internet 25 years ago, today even children under the age of three are now internet users with their phones and tablets. Of course, this change took place with the emergence of content that appeals to everyone and giants that serve everyone on the Internet. So which companies have dominated the internet in the last 25 years?

Here are the companies that have dominated the internet in the last 25 years

The answer to this question was given by Visual Capitalist with a simple list, with visualization. In the list showing the rulers of the internet in the last 25 years, the name at the top of that period was shown every 5 years. Accordingly, America Online in 1998, Yahoo in 2003, Google in 2008, Yahoo again in 2013, Google in 2018 and today Google were the leaders of the internet.

The arrival of Google on the list was very clearly visible. Founded in 1998, Google managed to become one of those who dominate the internet in just 5 years, and reached the top in 10 years. On the other hand, the media company America Online (AOL), founded in 1983, was last on this list in 1998. AOL now owns online media companies like TechCrunch, The Huffington Post and Engadget.

Of course, one of the other rises that should definitely be mentioned in the list is Facebook, the social networking platform established in 2004, manages to join the internet giants in just 4 years and enter the top 5 in the following years. On the other hand, Yahoo, which was once the internet giant, is in the third place today, despite continuing its struggle with Google and Facebook. In addition to all this, this list also reveals that the internet is completely managed by companies based in the United States.
