Climate activists, who were on the agenda by throwing mashed potatoes or soup at works of art, came to the fore again with their new creative(!) reactions. “Last Generation” activists in Italy poured coal diluted with water into the 18th-century Trevi Fountain in Rome.

While the activists shared the purpose of their actions as ensuring the immediate cessation of public subsidies to fossil fuels, their action also became a hot topic on social media. Images and reactions to the action were as follows:

Not every comment was negative, of course:

What happened after the action:

The Italian police intervened and pulled people out of the pool, before allowing the activists to end their protest. Activists said that during their protest, one out of every four houses in Italy was vulnerable to flooding.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri used the following statements in a statement he shared on Twitter:

“Enough of these ridiculous attacks on our artistic heritage. The Trevi Fountain was stained today. We hope there is no permanent damage, it is expensive and complex to restore. I invite activists to compete on a conflictual basis without risking monuments.”

It is expected that a permanent stain will not form on the fountain, but cleaning will require a great deal of effort…
