France-based automotive company Citroen came up with an interesting issue in Egypt. The company, which prepared a commercial for the C4 model, received a reaction across the country because of the scenes in this commercial. According to the Egyptians, the commercial in question showed how a woman was harassed, but no one was aware of it.

The commercial, featuring an Egyptian singer named Amr Diab, tells the story of a woman who jumped onto the road and a man inside the C4. Pressing a button just below the rear view mirror, the man takes a photo of the woman he was about to bump into seconds ago. Moreover, this photo falls on the smartphone as soon as the button is pressed. The commercial, which became the agenda in social media, faced the reaction of some segments.

“This is sexual harassment. You know that? It’s a crime”

Citroen’s controversial ad is not just that. In the next scenes, we see him during a journey where he took a picture with the singer named Amr Diab. In other words, these two decided to come together and combine their lives in the next period. This situation led to the criticism that the commercial film “normalizes sexual harassment”. Reem Abdellatif, co-founder of the Movement for the Protection of the Rights of African Women, said that he found the ad intimidating. Rosaline Elbay, one of the famous Egyptian actresses, responded by saying, “Hello, Citroën. This is sexual harassment. You know that? It’s a crime.”

Statement from Citroen

Citroen, which was on the agenda of social media in Egypt, had to make a statement on the subject. In the statements made on the subject, it was stated that the scenes in question were removed from the film and harassment was not tolerated. Citroen officials, who said they were sorry for what happened, stated that they wanted to emphasize the HD quality of the camera in question in the commercial, but they reached a completely different place.
