Chrome’s Memory and Energy Saver modes are widely available

Memory and Energy Saver modes came to Google Chrome for Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebooks last December. Recently, Google has made these modes widely available.

How Chrome Memory and Energy Saver modes work

Memory Saver mode works by freeing up memory on inactive tabs to provide more resources to other pages and applications on your computer. Inactive pages will remain visible in the tab strip and will reload when you navigate to those pages.

If you have problems with the mod that makes Chrome faster or don’t want to wait for the tab to refresh, Chrome lets you manually add pages to the Always keep these sites active list.

Energy Saver mode, on the other hand, conserves battery power by limiting Chrome’s background activity and visual effects. To enable this mode automatically, Chrome gives you two options:

1. Only turn on when my battery is 20% or less.
2. Turn on my computer when unplugged.

Memory and Energy Saver modes are enabled by default. You can turn these modes on or off in Chrome Settings > Performance.
