Cholera, which was on the agenda with the sea saliva seen in our country’s waters last year, came to the world’s agenda with worrying news today. China’s Wuhan University reported a case of cholera. With the detection of the case, Chinese experts immediately began to take measures to prevent the spread of the disease to large masses.
In the statement made by the health directorate in the region, it was reported that cholera was detected in a student. After the cholera case was detected, it was announced that samples were collected from the student, contact tracing was carried out and some places were closed for disinfection. China emphasized that no other cases have been detected so far.
What is cholera?
Cholera is a disease that spreads easily, especially in the warring and poor groups affected by natural disasters. It occurs when the bacteria Vibrio cholerae causes an infection in the small intestine. In this disease, in which a poison called ‘enterioxin’, which has a protein structure, is produced, the epithelial cells in the small intestine wall secrete an enzyme called adenyl cyclose.
With the secretion of the adenyl cyclose enzyme, there is an increase in the production of a substance called endorosine 3,5 monophosphate. The increase in the production of this substance causes the body fluid to pass into the cavity, and as a result, the fluid and electrolytes taken into the body are not absorbed by the small intestines, but are directly thrown out. Cholera, which occurs as a result of these chain events, endanger human life. According to the World Health Organization, cholera can cause death within hours if left untreated.
Cholera is not a ‘new’ disease today and there is a cure. To learn more about cholera, you can browse our content below:
