We have previously conveyed to you that China is in an artificial intelligence war with the West, and in this context, the use of ChatGPT in China-based companies is prohibited. The first concrete development that justified this ban took place today.

Baidu, China’s most used search engine, introduced its own AI-powered chat bot, Ernie Bot. The company’s chatbot, which organizes the press conference, can understand and provide answers to complex questions, just like ChatGPT.

Ernie Bot will not be available yet:

Baidu has announced that internal trials of Ernie Bot will be completed within this month. However, it has not yet shared a clear date on when the chatbot will be available. The CEO of the company, Robin Li, also underlined that the bot is not yet at the perfect level.

So what language model does this bot use?

Ernie Bot uses the language model ‘Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration (ERNIE)’, which was introduced in 2019 and has been in development ever since. There is no clear information about the capacity of the language model.

Just like Microsoft’s Bing, it will work integrated into the search engine:

Ernie Bot will follow the same path as the ChatGPT integration we saw on Bing today. The bot will be integrated into Baidu and will answer outgoing calls. But apart from that, Baidu will also try to focus on other areas.

The company plans to roll out the AI bot in smart vehicles, cloud and other industries. Moreover, according to the CEO’s statement, agreements were made with 650 companies in this context. Among these companies are media platforms affiliated with the Chinese state.
