Tensions between China and the USA, one of the most powerful countries in the world, continue. In the past years, the USA has made many investments to reduce its production and supply dependency on China. While companies such as Samsung and Intel want to reduce their dependence on China, China wants to reduce its dependence on the USA in the IT sector. China, which is dependent on Windows and macOS in the computer market, is developing its own open source operating system.
China’s new open source operating system: openKylin
Uncomfortable with its dependence on the USA, China requested the People’s Liberation Army National Defense Technology University to develop an operating system in 2001. Developed based on FreeBSD, the Kylin operating system is used by the military and the government, but is not used by the general consumer. In this direction, China is developing an open source version of Kylin.
According to the news of South China Morning Post, the Chinese Government is developing the openKylin project for the popularization of Kylin. openKylin will be based on Linux instead of FreeBSD like the new Kylin versions. Kylinsoft, a subsidiary of the government-owned China Electronics Corp, is establishing a new open source community by joining forces with many research groups in China. With the openKylin platform, open source developers will be able to contribute to the development of China’s national operating system.
