China introduced the first oil production vessel of the world that can catch carbon
China has taken an important step towards making oil production on the sea more environmentally friendly and introduced the world’s first oil production ship with carbon capture system. Built in Shanghai, this gigantic ship aims to reduce environmental effects by collecting carbon dioxide released during the operations, as well as oil extracted from the sea.

More environmental oil production will be realized

This 330 -meter -long floating production, storage and unloading vessel (FPSO) has a capacity to produce 120,000 barrels of oil per day. However, this ship draws attention not only with energy production, but also with its environmentally friendly technologies. FPSO aims to minimize environmental effects by capturing and storing the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere during oil extraction on the sea. This process is designed to allow the ship to produce electricity from the temperature of the exhaust gases released.

China, the world’s largest carbon emissions, in 2023, the Chinese National Submarine Oil Company (CNOC), Guangdong ENPING 15-1 in the oil field in the ENPING 15-1 under the seaside carbon capture system has launched. This system has a storage capacity of approximately 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

In terms of context; According to the International Energy Agency, the removal, transportation and processing of oil and natural gas produced approximately 5.1 billion tons of greenhouse gas in 2022, which made up about 15 percent of the worldwide energy.

Others develop similar solutions

The ship aims to reconcile high -efficiency oil production through innovative emission control and emphasizes China’s desire to achieve carbon goals. The country has committed to reach the summit by 2030 to the summit and to reach the net zero emission target by 2060.

On the other hand, other major global oil and gas companies pursue similar designs. In January, the American Maritime Bureau approved an ammonia production unit with carbon capture technology on board. Similarly with China, Dutch multinational SBM Offshore is preparing to launch a FPSO with a carbon capture system.
