While US sanctions limit China’s access to the chip technology it needs to develop artificial intelligence (AI), Chinese companies are not letting it stop them.
The race for artificial intelligence continues as China turns to develop artificial intelligence in-house without using the latest technology from the USA due to current sanctions. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Chinese companies are working on ways to develop artificial intelligence through combinations of weaker semiconductors and chips to overcome dependence on a single type of hardware.
Artificial Intelligence Race Continues
In the report presented by the Wall Street Journal, it was stated that researchers and analysts believe that creating an alternative to such chips will be difficult for Chinese technology firms, but some experiments are promising.
US sanctions against China in October 2022 deprived Chinese companies of access to the most advanced chips on the market. This includes Nvidia’s A100 chips and the H100, one of the most popular options in the AI development scene.
Currently, the Chinese market has access to Nvidia A800 and H800 chips, which are only available in small-scale AI models.
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has announced that it will soon launch a ChatGPT-like AI model it calls Tongyi Qianwen. Alibaba intends to integrate this chatbot into its suite of applications, including the workplace messaging program DingTalk.
ChatGPT is a product of the US-based company OpenAI. However, the race to create the best and most powerful AI system continues even among local American companies.
Recently, Microsoft released several new AI-powered features for chatbot Bing and web browser Edge, which are said to rival ChatGPT. Also, Google’s AI division, DeepMind, is said to have been restructured to offer the latest AI breakthroughs.
Chinese authorities have announced a mandatory review of all productive AI services released domestically before they are allowed to operate publicly.
