US-based Radeon graphics card manufacturer XFX got into big trouble at Chinese customs. Realizing that the graphics cards were imported illegally, the Chinese authorities seized 5840 XFX Radeon graphics cards.
According to the videos that appeared on China’s social media platform Weibo, the price tags on the containers of thousands of graphics cards belonging to the XFX brand were misspelled. In the statement made from the account of the Chinese customs administration, it was claimed that XFX wanted to evade customs duty.
China rejects $3M XFX Radeon graphics card
Customs inspectors at Huanggang Port in Shenzhen discovered that graphics cards were in mislabeled boxes in a shipment purported to be XFX . Employees examining the boxes of different models, including the Radeon RX 6700 XT, revealed that the total value of the graphics cards is more than the declared amount of XFX ($ 3 million).
According to the statement made by the Chinese customs administration on Weibo, XFX has made an unsuccessful attempt to lower the customs duty it has to pay to the Chinese government. Chinese news site MyDrivers claimed that in addition to evading import duty, XFX has the potential to sell graphics cards it bought from crypto miners as new products.
After the Chinese customs confiscated the graphics cards, it was noticed that the XFX China website and the Chinese shopping platform Tmall store were closed. Customs inspectors may have started checking XFX’s stocks in China to check for further irregularities.
It is currently not possible to determine whether the XFX brand is involved in customs fraud, but authorities are considering this possibility. As MyDrivers points out, this method has been used by other vendors in the past to reduce export cost, offer lower priced models, and evade taxes.
