OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind viral AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, has acquired Global Illumination, a New York-based startup that uses artificial intelligence to create creative tools, infrastructure and digital experiences. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, while this acquisition marks the first public acquisition in OpenAI’s nearly seven-year history.

First purchase from OpenAI

OpenAI did not disclose the terms of the acquisition in its announcement, but said that Global Illumination’s “whole team” had joined the company to work on its “core products”, including ChatGPT. Beyond that, the OpenAI did not specify exactly what the Global Illumination team will do at the company. But OpenAI’s rhetoric helps shape some things in the minds. “Global Illumination is a company that uses artificial intelligence to create creative tools, infrastructure and digital experiences,” the firm says in its announcement. Therefore, we are likely to see a more experience-oriented and creative structure in OpenAI’s solutions.

Although we don’t hear much about Global Illumination, the company has worked in important places in the past. He previously worked at Global Illumination, YouTube, Google, Pixar, Riot Games and other respected companies, who designed and developed products for Instagram and Facebook. Global Illumination’s website, on the other hand, is pretty plain. There’s a brief description of the company, a list of eight employees, and a link to a game called Biomes, which is described as “an open-source sandbox MMORPG built for the web.” Graphically, the game has a striking resemblance to Minecraft.
