The rapid development of tools such as ChatGPT and Midjourney caused great concern, and even names such as Elon Musk asked for a break from the development of artificial intelligence for a while. But the giants of this field continue to advance by thunder.

Entering great competition because of ChatGPT, which Microsoft is the biggest supporter and integrated into Bing, Google made a big announcement today. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that GPT-4-like language models will be integrated into Google searches.

Google’s language models will be integrated into the search engine:

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Pichai stated that with artificial intelligence, the opportunity environment has become bigger than it has ever been. He gave the answer to the question that has been wondering for a long time with the following sentence:

“Will people be able to ask Google questions and interact with LLMs (large language models) in searches? Definitely.”

Unfortunately, no date or timeframe has been provided for this integration.

So why was ChatGPT rival Bard just released?

In fact, this statement of Sundar Pichai was a highly anticipated statement. Reaching 100 million daily users with Bing’s ChatGPT integration caused a small decrease in Google’s daily visits. In March, months after ChatGPT went viral, it launched its own AI-powered chatbot, Bard.

Pichai answered the question why Bard has not been put into use until now, saying that the company was still looking for the right market at that time. He pointed to two artificial intelligences that Google has developed so far for future competition: DeepMind and Google Brain.

“I expect much more, stronger collaboration because some of these efforts will require more compute-intensive so it makes sense to do this together at a certain scale.”

The phrase “it makes sense to do this together at a certain scale” in this sentence points to Google’s dwindling workforce. The company laid off 12,000 employees, 6% of all employees, in January. At that time, “encountering with a different economic reality” was presented as a justification.

This different economic reality was the increase in costs. Especially since the development of artificial intelligence technologies is very costly, Pichai announced that they can combine the two artificial intelligences that have been developed for years and develop them at a lower cost.

Google CEO’s next comment:

Pichai stated that smaller AI models will have higher value over time, rather than large-scale AIs like ChatGPT and Bard. He stated that thanks to small-scale models, companies can design their own algorithms.

Google has also taken action in the past weeks to develop its artificial intelligence with end users:
