A YouTube user nicknamed Enderman posted a video in which he had ChatGPT generate usable Windows 95 license keys. It seems that the popular chatbot can be used to hack operating systems, although it is not state-of-the-art.

The user, who requested a Windows 95 license key directly from the OpenAI chatbot, was rejected as expected. ChatGPT declared that it could not perform the task and suggested to its researcher to consider a newer supported version of Windows. Generating a working Windows 95 key is relatively easy: The format of the Windows 95 OEM product key is as shown in the figure, and retail Windows 95 keys are even shorter and simpler.

ChatGPT crashed into tonga

Enderman put the formula into words to get around ChatGPT’s fundamental refusal to generate a softkey. First attempts were unsuccessful. But a few changes to the query structure worked. Some of the tested results were verified when attempting to activate a fresh installation of Windows 95 in a virtual machine, and only 1 of the 30 keys worked, even though the format of all license keys was correct.

Enderman notes that the only problem that prevents ChatGPT from successfully generating valid Windows 95 keys on each attempt is that it cannot count the sum of digits and does not know divisibility. After “successfully” generating multiple valid Windows 95 keys with a probability of 1 in 30, Enderman thanked the AI, “Thanks for these free Windows 95 keys!” he wrote. ChatGPT first claimed innocence and, when confronted with the fact that it “only activated a Windows 95 installation”, replied, “Sorry, but that’s not possible…”
