The drama is endless for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Ahead of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s four-day exile, several researchers wrote a letter to the board of directors warning of the discovery of a powerful artificial intelligence that could threaten humanity, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Did OpenAI make a dangerous AGI discovery?

According to sources, the previously unreported letter and the artificial intelligence algorithm served as a catalyst that led the board to dismiss Altman. Before Altman’s return last Tuesday, more than 700 employees had threatened to resign and join Microsoft in solidarity with their fired leader.

Longtime executive Mira Murati told employees about the project, called Q*, on Wednesday and confirmed that a letter had been sent to the board before this weekend’s events, according to one of the sources. The maker of ChatGPT is making progress on Q* (pronounced Q-Star), which he believes could be a turning point in the company’s search for superintelligence, also known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), one of the people who spoke to Reuters said.

It was stated that the Q* model was able to solve certain mathematical problems thanks to its large computing resources, and although it only performed mathematics at the level of primary school students, its success in such tests made researchers very optimistic about the future potential of Q*.

For researchers, mathematics is a frontier for productive AI development. While generative AI is currently pretty good at writing and language translation by statistically predicting the next word, answers to the same question can vary greatly. However, gaining the mathematical ability where there is only one correct answer means that artificial intelligence will have more advanced reasoning abilities similar to human intelligence.

Artificial intelligence science team was established

There has long been debate among computer scientists about the dangers posed by highly intelligent machines, such as whether they might decide that it is in their interest to destroy humanity. Therefore, AGI brings gains with dangers.

According to sources, OpenAI has established a special artificial intelligence team. The team, formed by merging the previous “Code Gen” and “Math Gen” teams, is investigating how to optimize existing artificial intelligence models to improve their reasoning and ultimately perform scientific studies.

At last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit of world leaders in San Francisco, Altman said he believed major advances were imminent. Altman said OpenAI has pushed back the veil of ignorance and pushed the frontier of discovery four times in its history, most recently in the past few weeks.

Altman, who described this as the greatest professional honor of his life, was fired by the board of directors a day later.
