The Chandrayaan-3 lander and its rover Pragyan began collecting data from the Moon’s south pole shortly after its successful landing. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which has managed to land in this extremely challenging region of the Moon for the first time in history, has recently published the first temperature profile of the Moon’s surface around its south pole.

Chandrayaan-3 is another success

The temperature profile shared by ISRO also goes down in history as the first temperature profile obtained from the Moon’s south pole. Values measured by the Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram’s instrument named ChaSTE (Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment) are published in X. According to the data, the temperature of the Moon’s topsoil is roughly 50 degrees Celsius. These latest data will enable scientists to “understand the thermal behavior of the lunar surface,” according to ISRO’s August 27 article.

Meanwhile, it was announced that the primary purpose of the ChaSTE instrument is to collect data on the thermal dynamics of the Moon’s surface by measuring the temperature profiles of the Moon’s topsoil near the pole. The depth of the topsoil of the Moon can vary between 5-20 meters. ChaSTE has a controlled drilling mechanism that allows it to penetrate 0 cm below the surface to measure the lunar soil.

You can reach our content, where we explain why the south pole of the moon is very important, from the link below.

The chart shared on X by ISRO shows the temperature range from -10 to 60 degrees Celsius, depending on depth. According to the graph, the temperature above the surface is roughly 50 degrees Celsius, while just 8 cm below the surface the temperature drops to -10 degrees Celsius.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission had three main objectives, and two of which were successfully achieved: soft landing and demonstrating that the rover can navigate the lunar surface. The third goal, which is still in progress, involves making scientific observations. The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover both have their own scientific instrumentation for lunar surface studies. All will send back a wealth of data about the Moon’s atmosphere, soil structure and minerals. This vital information could help solve a series of puzzles surrounding the Moon’s unexplored south polar region.
