Cell phones occupy a very important place in our lives. Of course, mobile phones, which have become a device with which we can both do our work and socialize, were not always this smart. The first call with a mobile phone took place exactly 50 years ago today.

First phone call: April 3, 1973

On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper made the first call on a mobile phone. Cooper chose to make his first public call with the manager of one of the companies he competed with. Thus, the biggest step has been taken for today’s smartphones.

Cooper, then an engineer at Motorola, spoke on the phone with Joel Engel, president of Bell Labs, an AT&T subsidiary. Cooper used the following statements in his search:

“I’m calling you on a cell phone, but it’s a real cell phone, a personal, handheld, portable cell phone“

Even though cell phones were made public only 10 years after this meeting, on April 3, history was made. In the fifty years since that first call, Cooper’s bulky device has evolved and become what it is today. Cell phones that look like bricks in the hand can now fit in our pockets. The point reached by smartphones, which catches up with almost every task, is truly astonishing.

Although the point reached seems surprising, Martin Cooper is not at all surprised by this situation. Expressing that he is not at all surprised that everyone has a mobile phone, 94-year-old Cooper states that they think that every person born at that time will be assigned a mobile phone number.

The idea of a portable phone making the call made by Martin Cooper in 1973 became a reality in 1983. At 25 cm long and weighing 793 grams, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X offered only 35 minutes of talk time. It took 10 hours to charge the phone.

It is possible to clearly see how far technology has advanced, even with these numbers alone. But the phone call made in 1973 will always have an important place in history. So what do you think about the first mobile phone? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
