Samsung’s own app store, Galaxy Store, is available on all Android devices of the company, along with Google Play Store. If you use the Galaxy Store a lot, we have bad news for you. Several apps have been detected here that can infect your phone with malware.
It’s surprising that these apps find their way into the Galaxy Store. Showbox is a popular pirate movie and TV show service that has been around for a while. Although the original app appears to have been shut down, the Galaxy Store lists several Showbox app clones for download. As AndroidPolice reports, Samsung has several Showbox-based apps in its app store. They appear to be infected with malware, as their installation triggers Google’s Play Protect alert. Further analysis shows the presence of malware and adware.
Apps can also request sensitive permissions such as access to call logs, phone and contacts. There is also a dynamic code execution vulnerability in these applications, which is what allows the application to download and run malware.
It’s unclear exactly how many times these malicious apps were downloaded, as the Galaxy Store doesn’t provide an install count for the apps. But the apps seem to have hundreds of reviews. This shows that the number of downloads is not an insignificant number.
The spread of these malicious apps through the app store is not a good thing for Samsung. In addition, the fact that applications that encourage piracy are found directly on the Galaxy Store does not make Samsung’s job any easier. Samsung has not yet made a statement on the matter.
